Best noise cancelling headphones of 2026, matched to where your noise comes from

For a plane or an open-plan office, buy the Sony WH-1000XM6: RTINGS measures it as the best noise cancelling pair they have tested, at 31.75 hours a charge. For padding over a six-hour flight, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2nd Gen. For roads and running, you want headphones that cancel nothing at all.

The pick in one paragraph

Our best noise cancelling headphones 2026 shortlist starts here. Buy the Sony WH-1000XM6 if you fly or share an office: RTINGS, who measure isolation on an instrumented head, call it the best noise cancelling pair they have tested, and they measured 31.75 hours of battery with the cancellation on. Buy the Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2nd Gen if padding and raw blocking matter more than sound and battery. Under a hundred dollars, the Sony WH-CH720N has three consecutive What Hi-Fi? awards. And if you are running on a road, buy something that leaves your ears open.

Questions to settle before you pay

Twelve questions, each with the verdict first, one number, and the source attached to it.

Which headphones cancel the most noise?

On measurements, the Sony WH-1000XM6: RTINGS, who test isolation on an instrumented head, call them the best noise cancelling headphones they have tested. What Hi-Fi? gives the Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2nd Gen the edge for raw blocking and the Sony the edge for sound. Both are a tier above everything cheaper, and the gap between them is smaller than the gap between either and a $100 pair.

Sony XM6 leads RTINGSRTINGS; What Hi-Fi? 2026

Which is comfortable for long wear, and what about glasses?

Bose, by most accounts. SoundGuys found the Ultra's thicker padding clearly better over long sessions than the Sony's firmer clamp, and a firmer clamp is also what pushes on glasses arms. If you wear glasses, the things to look for are deep pads, low clamp force, and a band that sits behind the head rather than on top of it.

Bose padding wins long sessionsSoundGuys

How much battery do I actually need?

For a single long-haul flight, anything claiming 24 hours is fine. How often you are willing to charge them is the question that settles it. Sennheiser's Momentum 4 claims 60 hours, the flagships claim 30, and RTINGS measured 31.75 hours on the Sony with ANC on. Earbuds are a different animal: six to ten hours per charge, with the case as the reserve tank.

31.75 h measured on the XM6RTINGS

Which has the better microphone and multi-device switching?

The Sony takes calls better among the flagships, with a twelve-microphone array reviewers rate above Bose's. Multipoint, which keeps a laptop and a phone connected at once, is on every over-ear pick here. On open-ear designs, wind is the limit: run-focused reviewers rate Shokz calls as good rather than class-leading.

Multipoint on every over-ear pickMaker specs; reviewer comparisons

Which sounds best, and can I change the tuning?

What Hi-Fi? gives sound to the Sony over the Bose, and Sennheiser and Bowers & Wilkins sell on tone rather than on silence. Every pick here except the open-ear models has app EQ, and the Sony has a ten-band one, so the stock tuning matters less than it used to.

Sony leads Bose on soundWhat Hi-Fi? 2026

Should I buy over-ear, earbuds or open-ear?

Over-ear for flights and desks: the pads do half the isolation work and the battery is measured in days. Earbuds for pockets and gyms, where the tip does the sealing. Open-ear for roads and shared rooms, where hearing the world is a feature rather than a flaw. The three are different tools, not three price tiers.

Three tools, not three tiersCategory roundups by type

How do I avoid a counterfeit pair?

Buy the listing, not the photo. Check who it ships from and who it is sold by, prefer Amazon itself or the brand's own storefront, treat a flagship priced far below everyone else as a warning rather than a win, and register the serial number with the brand when it arrives. Headphones are one of the most counterfeited categories on any marketplace.

Check sold-by before you payRetail guidance and brand counterfeit notices

Is the previous generation good enough?

Usually, and this is where the money is. In our own 25 October listing data the Sony XM5 sat $278 below the XM6, and the Sennheiser Momentum 4 sat roughly half the price of the Momentum 5. You give up measured ANC at the extremes and some microphone quality. You keep the battery, the app and the build.

$278 between XM6 and XM5Our listing data, 25 Oct 2026

Does my phone change which pair I should buy?

For earbuds, yes. AirPods give iPhone owners instant pairing, device switching and Find My, and lose nearly all of it on Android. Sony's LDAC and Samsung's codec features go the other way. For over-ears the gap is smaller: the Sony and Bose flagships behave the same on both, which is one reason they are the safe picks.

Flagship over-ears are platform-neutralMaker specs; retailer codec guidance

What should I run or cycle in?

Something that leaves your ears open. Bone conduction sends sound through your cheekbones and keeps the canal clear, so you hear the car behind you; clip-on air-conduction designs do the same with a different shape. Noise cancelling earbuds in traffic are the one unsafe choice in this category.

Open by design, on purposeOpen-ear design guidance

Which of these survive sweat and rain?

Not the flagships. Neither the Sony WH-1000XM6 nor the Bose QC Ultra publishes a water rating, which tells you they are indoor and travel headphones. Sport models publish an IP figure, and that is the number to look for: the first digit is dust, the second is water.

No IP rating on either flagshipMaker specs

What is worth buying under $100?

Two things. The Sony WH-CH720N, which What Hi-Fi? has given three consecutive awards as the best cheap over-ear noise canceller, and the Soundcore Space A40 earbuds, which RTINGS has on its tested list. Below that, you are buying passive isolation with a logo on it.

If you want the quietest flight you can buy and you are not married to Apple, this is the answer and it is not close to controversial. RTINGS, who measure isolation on a B&K test head, call the WH-1000XM6 the best noise cancelling headphones they have tested. What Hi-Fi? made them their overall pick for 2026, taking the crown from Sony's own three-time winner.

The number that matters on a long flight is battery, and this is where the XM6 pulls ahead of everything else at the top of the market. Sony claims 30 hours with ANC on; RTINGS measured 31.75 hours continuous, and SoundGuys got 37 hours 14 minutes in their own run. Three minutes at the gate buys three hours of listening.

It is the smarter pair, too: ten-band EQ, location-based profiles, LDAC for Android, and a microphone array reviewers rate above Bose's for calls. The trade-off is comfort. Several testers prefer Bose's thicker padding for a six-hour wear, and the Sony carries no water rating, so it is not a gym pair.

Buy these if the point is silence and the sessions are long. Bose has been the noise-cancelling benchmark for three decades and the 2nd Gen Ultra is the pair that reviewers reach for when the question is purely how much sound disappears. What Hi-Fi? has it blocking marginally harder than the Sony; Tom's Guide, who lived with both for six months, says the same.

Comfort is the other reason. SoundGuys found the thicker padding clearly better for long listening, and on a transatlantic flight or a full office day that counts for more than a decibel. Immersive Audio is Bose's spatial mode and it is the feature people either use daily or switch off in week one; it costs you roughly seven hours of battery when it is on.

Where it gives ground: sound quality comes second to the Sony in What Hi-Fi?'s judgement, battery is shorter in every test we could find, and the fast charge is 15 minutes for 2.5 hours against Sony's 3 minutes for 3 hours. There is no water rating here either. Check the model name carefully, because Bose sells a 1st Gen and a 2nd Gen Ultra under almost the same title.

This is the best value in the category, and our own listing data sharpens the case more than any review can. The XM5 was What Hi-Fi?'s top noise-canceller through three award cycles before the XM6 took over. It still cancels more noise than anything else near its price.

Here is the part nobody else prints. On 25 October we tracked both colours of this model: silver at $179.99 and black at $298.00, on the same day, same seller platform, same headphone. That is $118, or 40 percent, for a paint job. Open both colours before you buy, every time.

Against the XM6 it loses some measured ANC at the extremes, the better microphone array, and a folding hinge. What you keep is 30 hours of battery, LDAC, multipoint and a pair that reviewers were happy to call the best in the world eighteen months ago.

If the budget is under a hundred dollars, stop reading comparison tables and buy this. What Hi-Fi? has given the WH-CH720N three consecutive awards as the best cheap over-ear noise canceller, and their reviewers are not generous.

It is light, it claims 35 hours with ANC on, which is longer than either flagship, and it dampens a commute reliably rather than impressively. That is the correct expectation: cheap ANC removes the hum, not the voices.

The corners cut are visible and fair. No folding hinge, no carry case, no LDAC, no water rating. If you want a pair to leave at a desk and forget, that list does not matter. As a single pair for flights and the gym, it is the wrong choice.

The flagship experience in a pocket. RTINGS has these on its tested list of noise cancelling models, and the appeal is obvious if you already know you will not carry a case the size of a sandwich.

Set expectations on two numbers. Battery is hours rather than a day and a half, because the case is the battery. And isolation depends on the seal, which depends on the tips: swap through the sizes in the box before you judge the ANC, because a loose tip costs more noise reduction than any processor can win back.

For Android owners LDAC is the reason to pick Sony over Apple here. For iPhone owners the gap narrows and the ecosystem features of AirPods start to matter more than codecs.

The earbud answer to the same question the QC Ultra over-ears answer: how much of the world can I delete. Bose calibrates the cancellation to your ear canal on every fit, which is why its earbuds tend to beat their spec sheet.

Battery is the price of that, at around six hours with ANC and less with Immersive Audio running. For a flight that means one charge in the case mid-journey, which is fine, and for a day of meetings it means the case lives on the desk.

One buying warning for the entire Bose range right now: a 1st Gen and a 2nd Gen are sold under nearly identical names. Check the generation on the listing page before you pay, not after.

The pair we would buy with someone else's hundred dollars. RTINGS tests it alongside the flagships, it supports LDAC, and it runs about ten hours per charge with ANC, which is longer than either flagship earbud on this page.

What a budget set actually does is take the edge off: the train floor rumble goes, the announcement does not. If you have been told cheap ANC is useless, this is the pair that proves otherwise; if you have been told it matches Bose, that is marketing.

The right pair for the road, and the only pick here that deliberately lets noise in. Bone conduction sends the sound through your cheekbones and leaves your ear canals open, so you hear the bus as well as the podcast.

The old complaint about bone conduction was that it had no bass. The Pro 2 adds a dedicated air-conduction bass unit, which is why this generation is the one worth paying for rather than the original.

Two limits. Calls in wind are good, not great, by the account of reviewers who actually run in them. And in a quiet library or a plane cabin they are the wrong tool entirely: letting noise in is how they are designed to work.

Sixty hours. That is the pitch, and in a category where the flagships claim thirty it is a real difference: this is a pair you charge monthly rather than weekly.

The noise cancelling is a tier below the Sony and Bose flagships and no reviewer pretends otherwise, but it is adaptive, it is effective on a plane, and the sound is the reason Sennheiser has the following it has. App EQ is full rather than token.

If you have an iPhone and a budget, this is the sweet spot right now. The current model is the AirPods Pro 3, which is what the labs are testing; the 2nd Gen is the one sitting at a discount while the new model takes the shelf.

What you are buying is not just the ANC, which is strong for an earbud, but the Apple plumbing: pair by opening the case, switch between iPhone, iPad and Mac without touching anything, find them when they fall out of a bag, head-tracked spatial audio.

On Android that list evaporates and you are left with ordinary Bluetooth earbuds at a not-ordinary price. If your phone is not an iPhone, buy the Sony or the Anker instead and keep the savings.

Six places you listen, six different answers

Pick the scene at the top of the page and the list filters itself. Here is the reasoning behind each one.

On a plane

Cabin noise is mostly low-frequency, and low frequencies are what cancellation removes best. Want 24 hours or more of rated battery, an over-ear shape, and the airline adapter in your bag.

Sony WH-1000XM6 · Bose QC Ultra 2

In an open-plan office

Half the job is blocking, half is taking the call. Multipoint matters so the laptop and the phone can both stay connected, and voices will be muffled rather than erased.

Sony WH-1000XM6 · Momentum 4

Train and bus

Rumble goes, announcements do not, and you want something you can hang round your neck. Earbuds win on bag space, over-ears on quiet.

Sony WF-1000XM6 · Sony XM5

Walking and cycling

The hazard is not hearing the car. Open-ear designs leave the canal clear on purpose, and this is the one scene where cancellation is the wrong feature.

Shokz headphones, specifically the OpenRun Pro 2

At home with kids

All-day wear means padding and a transparency mode you can trigger fast. Battery measured in days beats battery measured in hours.

Bose QC Ultra 2 · Momentum 4

Gym and running

Sweat and movement rule out both flagships: neither publishes a water rating. Buy a sport-rated open-ear pair or sealed buds with ear hooks.

OpenRun Pro 2 · Space A40

What the newest generation costs

  • Sony WH-1000XM6 listed $278 above the Sony WH-1000XM5 ($458.00 against $179.99), one generation back.
  • Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 listed $49 above the Shokz OpenRun Pro ($229.00 against $179.95), one generation back.

Prices we refused to print

  • Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): one listing at $199.99, too low for a current-generation Bose QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen) over-ear. We hide that price rather than repeat it.

Buying a genuine pair, in four checks

Headphones are among the most counterfeited things sold online. These four checks take a minute and they work.

  1. Read the buy box, not the titleOn the listing page, look for the two lines that say Ships from and Sold by. Amazon.com or the brand's own storefront is what you want.
  2. Price-check against the other listings of the same modelA flagship priced far below every other listing of the same model is the oldest counterfeit signal there is. Our price desk exists partly for this.
  3. Check the model name against the brand's own siteCounterfeits and grey imports often carry a model string the manufacturer never used. Bose and Sony both list their current model names publicly.
  4. Register the serial number when it arrivesBrand registration confirms the unit is genuine and starts the warranty. If registration fails, return it inside the window rather than arguing later.

Affiliate links cannot choose the seller for you, which is exactly why this section exists. The button sends you to the product page; the four lines above are what to read when you land there.

A five-minute fit test (glasses included)

A leaking seal costs more noise reduction than any processor can win back, and glasses arms are the usual leak.

    1. Put the glasses on first, then the headphonesAlways test in that order. The arm has to sit under the pad, not fight it.
    2. Press each cup gently and listenIf the noise drops when you press, the seal is leaking at the arm and you are losing cancellation.
    3. Check the pad depthA shallow pad puts your ear against the driver and your glasses arm under tension.
    4. Walk around for five minutesClamp force that feels fine seated turns into a headache standing up.
    5. Consider a behind-the-head bandOpen-ear sport models route the band behind the skull, which sidesteps the problem entirely.

How cancellation works, in a four-minute video

How noise cancelling actually works, on a YouTube channel. No request goes to YouTube before you press play. Watch on YouTube.

Before you pay: a short checklist

The noise-cancelling headphones benefits worth paying for

Three, and they are not the ones on the box. Less fatigue at the end of a flight, because your ears stop working against engine noise. Lower listening volume, because you are not competing with the room. And a usable call where a speakerphone would be hopeless. Everything else, including the idea that ANC headphones make music sound better, is marketing.

What cancellation can and cannot remove

Microphones hear the noise arriving at the cup and the driver plays its inverse. That works beautifully on steady, low-frequency sound, which is why an aircraft cabin falls away and the conversation two seats over does not. Expect engines, air conditioning and road rumble to disappear, and voices to become muffled.

The seal does half the work

Pads on an over-ear and tips in an ear canal block sound physically before any electronics are involved. That is why labs measure isolation and cancellation together, why worn pads cost you real performance, and why the first thing to do with new earbuds is to try every tip size in the box.

    Ear pressure and transparency mode

Some people find active cancellation uncomfortable: a feeling of pressure or fullness in the ears, most noticeable on earbuds that seal deep in the canal and at the strongest ANC setting. It differs from person to person and no spec predicts it, so buy where returns are easy and wear the pair for a couple of hours at home before you keep it.

Transparency mode (also called ambient or hear-through) uses the microphones to pipe outside sound in, so you can hear a colleague or a station announcement without taking the headphones off. Check that you can switch it on with a button on the headphones, not only in an app. If you feel pain or dizziness, stop using the headphones and ask a doctor.

    Codecs, briefly

LDAC is the high-bitrate option on many Android phones and is Sony's; aptX Lossless and Snapdragon Sound are the equivalent route on recent Qualcomm Android phones and are what Bose supports; iPhones use AAC. Both ends have to speak the same one, and none of it fixes a bad seal.

    Multipoint

Two devices connected at once, so a call on the phone interrupts the laptop. If you work at a desk it is the feature you will use most, and every over-ear pick on this page has it.

    Water ratings

An IP number has two digits: dust, then water. IPX4 means water was rated and dust was not. Neither flagship on this page publishes a rating at all, which tells you plainly that they are travel and desk headphones.

    Over-ear, earbuds, open-ear

Call them earphones, ear buds or headphones bluetooth if that is how you search: there are still only three shapes, and the best headphones for you is whichever shape fits the room. Over-ear and other wireless headphones for flights and desks, earbuds for pockets and gyms, open-ear for roads. They are three different tools. Buying an over-ear for running or an open-ear for a flight is the most common expensive mistake in this category.

How the list was built and how to read the scores

This site runs on two kinds of evidence, and every number on it carries a label saying which one it is.

    Published measurement

RTINGS buys headphones and measures isolation on an instrumented head; SoundGuys and What Hi-Fi? run their own batteries of listening and battery tests; Tom's Guide lives with pairs for months. Where one of them has published a figure, we use theirs and name them, as in the 31.75-hour battery measurement on the Sony.

    Our own listing desk

On Oct 25, 2026 we captured 83 live listings covering 16 headphone models, matched 34 of them to specific model codes, and compared every variant of the same model against itself. That is where the colour-price gap and the generation gap on this page come from. Nobody else publishes that, because it means re-capturing the market rather than re-reading a review.

The five checks behind the score

    CheckPointsHow it is scored
Independent evidence30Measured in RTINGS' lab 30; measured by more than one named outlet 26; one named outlet's hands-on test 23; the same family tested 16; the maker's spec, cross-checked against the listing 10.
Noise control25Class-leading and measured 25; very strong 21; good for the money 16; light 11; open by design 6.
    Battery15Measured hours where a lab published them, the maker's rated hours otherwise: 50 h and over 15, 34 h 14, 28 h 12, 24 h 10, 10 h 8.
Comfort and fit15Plush and built for long sessions 14; stays put when you move 14; light 13; in-ear 12; firm clamp 11; heavy or warm 8.
Calls and connection15Multipoint plus app EQ plus a strong mic 15; one of those 12; best inside one ecosystem 12; pairs and plays 7.

10 models carry a score. An open-ear pair scores low on noise control by design, which is why the ranking is grouped by job rather than read off the total.

    What we will not do

We do not rank by Amazon star ratings. We do not print a struck-through price we cannot verify. We do not repeat a decibel claim that has no test behind it, and when a listing price looks impossible we hide it and say so in the price desk.

    How this site makes money

Links to Amazon are affiliate links, they are labelled as going to Amazon, and they carry no cost to you. They do not change the order of the list: our top pick is the one the labs measure highest, and the pick we push hardest on value is last year's model, which pays less.

    Frequently asked

What are the best noise cancelling headphones in 2026?

The Sony WH-1000XM6 on measurements, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2nd Gen if raw blocking and padding matter more, and the Sony WH-CH720N if the budget is under a hundred. RTINGS calls the XM6 the best noise cancelling headphones it has tested; What Hi-Fi? made it their overall 2026 pick.

How do noise cancelling headphones actually work?

Microphones listen to the sound arriving at the earcup and the driver plays an inverted version of it, so the two largely cancel. It works best on steady low-frequency noise, which is why engine rumble disappears and the voice two rows back does not. Passive sealing from the pads or tips does the rest.

How do ANC and noise isolation differ?

Isolation is physical: pads and tips blocking sound. ANC is electronic cancellation on top. RTINGS measures the two together because that is what you actually hear, and it is why a worn earpad costs you more quiet than a firmware update can give back.

Do noise cancelling headphones cause ear pressure?

Some people notice a pressure or fullness feeling with active noise cancelling, most often on earbuds that seal deep in the canal and at the strongest setting. It is a comfort question rather than a spec, and it differs from person to person. If it bothers you, try a lower ANC level, a different ear-tip size or an over-ear pair, or choose an open-ear design that leaves the canal clear. Buy from a seller with an easy return policy so you can test a pair for a few hours. If you get pain or dizziness, stop using them and ask a doctor.

What is transparency mode, and do I need it?

Transparency mode (also called ambient or hear-through) uses the microphones to play outside sound into the headphones, so you can hear an announcement or a colleague without taking them off. It matters most for commuting, open-plan offices and shared paths, and least on a flight. Look for one you can switch on with a button on the headphones rather than only in the app, and check reviews for whether it sounds natural or hissy.

Which Sony headphones should I buy?

The WH-1000XM6 if you want the best tested noise cancelling, the WH-1000XM5 if you want most of that for a lot less, the WH-CH720N under a hundred dollars, and the WF-1000XM6 if it has to fit in a pocket. The letters matter: WH is over-ear, WF is earbuds.

Which Bose headphones should I buy, and what is QuietComfort Ultra?

QuietComfort Ultra is the flagship line and it now exists in a 1st and a 2nd Gen with almost the same name, in both over-ear and earbud form. For most buyers the 2nd Gen over-ear is the one: What Hi-Fi? rates it as blocking marginally more than the Sony. Check the generation on the listing, because the names do not.

    Are Apple headphones worth it?

On an iPhone, the AirPods line buys you instant pairing, device switching, Find My and head-tracked spatial audio, and the current model is the AirPods Pro 3. On Android you lose nearly all of that. The AirPods Max 2 is the over-ear, and it is heavier and dearer than the Sony and Bose flagships.

    What about JBL headphones?

JBL's Live 780NC appears on RTINGS' tested list of noise cancelling models, so the brand is competitive in this class. We do not rank a JBL pair here because none appeared in the listing set we collected on 25 October, and we only rank models we can price and link accurately.

Are Beats headphones good for noise cancelling?

The Studio Pro is the pair to look at, and its advantage over an Apple-only product is that one-touch pairing works on Android too. Noise cancelling sits below the Sony and Bose flagships in published comparisons, so buy it on a discount rather than at full price.

    Which wireless earbuds are best?

The Sony WF-1000XM6 for Android, the AirPods line for iPhone, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds if blocking is everything, and the Soundcore Space A40 if the budget is tight. For every one of them, change the tips until the seal is right before you judge the noise cancelling.

Are bone conduction headphones any good?

For running and cycling, yes, and for the specific reason that they leave your ears open. The old complaint was thin bass; the Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 adds an air-conduction bass unit to fix exactly that. For a flight they are the wrong tool: they are not trying to block anything.

How do the Shokz OpenRun and OpenFit differ?

OpenRun is bone conduction with a band behind the head, which stays put at running pace. OpenFit clips over the ear and uses air conduction, which sounds fuller and suits walking, the office and anyone who dislikes a band. Both leave the ear canal open.

What are the best budget headphones?

Under a hundred dollars, the Sony WH-CH720N over-ear and the Soundcore Space A40 earbuds. Both have been tested by outlets that publish their methods. Below about forty dollars, active noise cancelling claims stop meaning much and you are buying passive isolation.

Wireless or bluetooth headphones: is there a difference?

In practice no, the words are used for the same thing. What matters is the codec your phone and headphones share, whether multipoint lets you hold two devices at once, and whether there is a cable option for when the battery dies.

What is multipoint, and do I need it?

Multipoint keeps two devices connected at the same time, so a call on your phone interrupts music from your laptop. If you work at a desk with a phone next to you, it is the feature you will use every day. Every over-ear pick on this page has it.

Do codecs like LDAC and aptX matter?

A little, and only if both ends support the same one. LDAC is the higher-bitrate option on many Android phones and is Sony's; aptX Lossless and Snapdragon Sound are Bose's route on recent Android phones; iPhones use AAC. No codec fixes a bad seal.

How do I know an Amazon listing is genuine?

Open the buy box and read who it ships from and who it is sold by. Amazon itself or the brand's own storefront is the safe pair. A flagship priced far below every other listing of the same model is the classic counterfeit signal, and so is a listing with a model name that does not exist on the brand's own site.

When do noise cancelling headphones go on sale?

Flagships fall hardest when the next generation arrives, which is exactly what our price desk is showing right now. Our own 25 October capture had the Sony XM5 at $278 below the XM6, and two colours of that same XM5 $118 apart on the same day.

Does the colour change the price?

It can, by a lot, and nobody tells you. In our 25 October listing data the silver Sony WH-1000XM5 was $179.99 while the black one was $298.00: the same headphones, the same day. Always open the other colours before you check out.

What should I take on a plane?

An over-ear with a published battery figure above 24 hours, and a two-prong airline adapter if you want the in-flight films. Cabin noise is mostly low-frequency, the part ANC removes best, so this is the scenario where the flagships earn their price.

What is best for an open-plan office?

An over-ear with multipoint and a good microphone, because the job is half blocking and half taking the call. Voices are harder for ANC than engine noise, so expect the room to be muffled rather than silent, and use the transparency mode when someone walks up.

Can I sleep in noise cancelling headphones?

Not comfortably in any of these. For sleep, foam earplugs cost a few dollars and outperform every pair on this page. We would rather say that than sell you a $400 solution to a $6 problem.

    Which headphones work with glasses?

Look for deep pads, a soft clamp and, best of all, a band that sits behind the head. Glasses arms break the seal, and a broken seal is the main reason ANC underperforms for people who wear them. Our fit checklist walks through the five-minute test.

What about the warranty if I buy on Amazon?

Brand warranties generally require an authorised seller, which is one more reason the sold-by line matters. Keep the order confirmation, and register the serial number with the brand when the box arrives.

What to buy, by where you sit

One pair for flights and the office: the Sony WH-1000XM6, the best measured noise cancelling on the market with the battery to match.

If padding and blocking come first: the Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2nd Gen.

If you want most of that for much less: the Sony WH-1000XM5, and open both colours before you pay.

If you run on roads: the Shokz OpenRun Pro 2, which cancels nothing, on purpose.
