What to buy, briefly

Best earbuds first, caveats second. The Sony WF-1000XM6 for Android, the AirPods line for iPhone, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds if blocking is your priority, and the Soundcore Space A40 if the budget is tight: RTINGS has that last one on its tested list at under $60. Whichever you buy, work through every tip size in the box before you judge the noise cancelling.

What to settle first

Should I buy over-ear, earbuds or open-ear?

Over-ear for flights and desks: the pads do half the isolation work and the battery is measured in days. Earbuds for pockets and gyms, where the tip does the sealing. Open-ear for roads and shared rooms, where hearing the world is a feature rather than a flaw. The three are different tools, not three price tiers.

Three tools, not three tiersCategory roundups by type

Does my phone change which pair I should buy?

For earbuds, yes. AirPods give iPhone owners instant pairing, device switching and Find My, and lose nearly all of it on Android. Sony's LDAC and Samsung's codec features go the other way. For over-ears the gap is smaller: the Sony and Bose flagships behave the same on both, which is one reason they are the safe picks.

Flagship over-ears are platform-neutralMaker specs; retailer codec guidance

What is worth buying under $100?

Two things. The Sony WH-CH720N, which What Hi-Fi? has given three consecutive awards as the best cheap over-ear noise canceller, and the Soundcore Space A40 earbuds, which RTINGS has on its tested list. Below that, you are buying passive isolation with a logo on it.

Samsung Galaxy Buds 4 Pro

Best inside Samsung's ecosystem

  • Scalable codec and Auracast features work best with recent Galaxy phones
  • Our 25 October data showed three listings of the same model from $167.19 to $243.99

Sony WF-C510

Cheap Sony buds, no active noise cancelling
  • Passive isolation only: there is no ANC in this model
  • Very small and light, with 11 hours claimed per charge
  • Around a third of the price of the Space A40 in our data

We list it because people land on it while shopping for ANC and assume it has some. It does not. If you want cancellation at a low price, the Space A40 is the pair.

What to add

Memory foam tips for earbuds

Universal memory foam earbud tips

On earbuds the tip is the noise cancelling. Foam expands into the canal and usually beats the silicone in the box, which is why reviewers test fit before they judge ANC.

What to look for: Match the stem diameter, and size up until the seal holds without pressure.

Ear hooks, if buds fall out

Anti-slip ear hooks for AirPods Pro

Cheaper than losing one bud at the gym, and they let you size the tip for seal rather than for grip.

What to look for: Model-specific shapes; Pro 2 and Pro 3 are different.

A cleaning pen for the mesh

Earbud cleaning kit with brush and pen

Blocked mesh is the usual reason one earbud goes quiet. People replace the pair; the fix is a two-dollar brush.

What to look for: Soft brush plus putty. Keep metal away from the driver mesh.

Asked and answered

Which wireless earbuds are best?

The Sony WF-1000XM6 for Android, the AirPods line for iPhone, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds if blocking is everything, and the Soundcore Space A40 if the budget is tight. For every one of them, change the tips until the seal is right before you judge the noise cancelling.

Are Apple headphones worth it?

On an iPhone, the AirPods line buys you instant pairing, device switching, Find My and head-tracked spatial audio, and the current model is the AirPods Pro 3. On Android you lose nearly all of that. The AirPods Max 2 is the over-ear, and it is heavier and dearer than the Sony and Bose flagships.

Do codecs like LDAC and aptX matter?

A little, and only if both ends support the same one. LDAC is the higher-bitrate option on many Android phones and is Sony's; aptX Lossless and Snapdragon Sound are Bose's route on recent Android phones; iPhones use AAC. No codec fixes a bad seal.

What are the best budget headphones?

Under a hundred dollars, the Sony WH-CH720N over-ear and the Soundcore Space A40 earbuds. Both have been tested by outlets that publish their methods. Below about forty dollars, active noise cancelling claims stop meaning much and you are buying passive isolation.

How do I know an Amazon listing is genuine?

Open the buy box and read who it ships from and who it is sold by. Amazon itself or the brand's own storefront is the safe pair. A flagship priced far below every other listing of the same model is the classic counterfeit signal, and so is a listing with a model name that does not exist on the brand's own site.
